How Should My Child Prepare for School Picture Day?

School picture day is quick and fun, and a little preparation can help ensure your child feels confident and looks their best in their photos.

Before Picture Day

Choose an Outfit in Advance

Consider selecting your child's outfit the night before picture day to avoid any last-minute stress.

Keep in mind that these photos are often used for yearbooks and school records, so many families prefer solid colors or simple patterns that keep the focus on their child's face.

Check Hair and Appearance Before School

Please make sure your child's hair, clothing, and accessories are arranged the way you would like them before they arrive at school.

For the comfort and safety of students, our photographers typically do not physically adjust a child's hair, clothing, jewelry, or other personal items.

Unless the school provides teachers or parent volunteers to assist, our photographers are generally only able to verbally instruct students if they notice something out of place.

Talk to Your Child About Outerwear

If you would prefer your child not be photographed wearing a coat, hoodie, sweater, jacket, or other outerwear, please discuss this with them before picture day.

Many students choose to keep these items on, especially during colder weather. While our photographers may remind students to remove outerwear when appropriate, the final decision is often left to the student at the time of their photo.

We occasionally hear from parents who are disappointed to see a hoodie or jacket in the final image, so it is helpful to discuss your preferences with your child in advance.

Help Your Child Feel Prepared

Practice Their Smile

For younger students especially, it can be helpful to practice smiling at home.

A quick conversation about picture day and a few practice smiles can help your child feel more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.

Let them know that picture day is quick, easy, and that they simply need to listen to the photographer's instructions.

Remind Them to Listen to the Photographer

Our photographers will guide students through the process and provide simple instructions regarding posture, head position, and where to look.

Encouraging your child to listen carefully can help us capture the best possible photo.

What to Expect on Picture Day

School picture sessions are typically very brief, often lasting only 1–2 minutes per student. Because of the number of students being photographed, there is limited time for adjustments once a student reaches the camera.

Taking a few minutes to prepare beforehand can make a big difference and help ensure your child looks exactly how you want them to in their school photos.

We look forward to photographing your student!
